In a virtual event held on March 25, Science Arena brought together sociologist Glauco Arbix, scientific coordinator of the Responsible AI Chair at the University of São Paulo (USP), and immunologist Luiz Vicente Rizzo, director of research at Einstein Hospital Israelita, to discuss the future of scientific knowledge production in an era of uncertainty and rapid technological change.

According to Arbix and Rizzo, uncertainty has always been an inherent part of scientific practice, but it has taken on new dimensions with the rise of AI, the increasing complexity of global challenges, and mounting pressure for quick answers, requiring science to strike a careful balance between speed and rigor while contending with unequal access to technology and trade-offs between the quantity and quality of research output.
The discussion also explores AI’s impact on scientific practice, from its ability to accelerate data processing to the risks associated with its misuse, including the amplification of bias and the excessive standardization of research.
Arbix and Rizzo conclude that today’s research environment demands not only technical expertise but also critical reflection on the scientist’s role, the ability to formulate meaningful research questions, and a steadfast commitment to the principles of the scientific method.
